How can rainwater be used?

Australia is the driest continent on earth and in most rural communities dams are often empty or dry and the only water available is via rainwater tanks.

Essentially all the water we use, be it mains water or tank water, is rainwater, however, the water that comes from your tap is passed through a series of filters and is chemically treated, then piped to homes using a large pumping station and local reservoirs.

Victoria is very lucky in that we have collection areas that are locked off from human use to ensure the harvested water is pristine. Due to the ongoing drought we are experiencing lower than normal dam levels, the population boom, has led to high density housing construction placing greater strain on our aging public stormwater system.  

This is why now, more than ever, it is important we supplement the use of our mains water and manage the flow of our stormwater from  within our own homes. Stormwater that would normally pass directly to public drains can be detained, retained and used back within the home or business.

It can be used for applications that do not require pristine town water such as irrigation and toilet flushing.

Is your stored water safe to use?

It is legal to use harvested stormwater for all applications within the home, however it is not recommended that it be used for drinking water.

If treated and filtered correctly rainwater can be a perfectly safe option to supplement your water consumption.
